Why Cheese?

Sturminster Newton, situated in the heart of the Blackmore Vale, was referred to by Thomas Hardy as ‘The vale of little dairies’. Prior to the First World War, agriculture was very different to the way we see it today. Milk production was generally on a small scale, and farms used much of the milk for their own consumption, selling any surplus locally.

In 1998 the town was home to the largest calf market in Europe and a Creamery which made award-winning cheese. Sadly, the market was closed; that site is now home to The Exchange, our arts, entertainment & business venue and community hub. The community decided that the Town needed something which reflected our market heritage and showcased our award-winning cheese, and so the Cheese Festival was born, the first event taking place in 1999.

FAQs

Tickets for Carers?

We aim to make the Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Carer tickets are available free of charge for visitors who require assistance during their visit.

How do I request a carer ticket?
Carer tickets are issued after a standard ticket has been purchased. Please complete your booking first, then email tickets@cheesefestival.co.uk with your booking reference, the name on the booking, and confirmation that a carer will be attending. We will then arrange for a carer ticket to be issued and linked to your booking.

Do I need to provide evidence?
No, we do not require formal proof to issue a carer ticket. We operate on a trust basis to ensure the process remains straightforward and accessible for those who need support.

How many carer tickets can I request?
Carer tickets are typically issued on a one-to-one basis (one carer per paying visitor).

Do carers need their own ticket?
Yes. Although the carer ticket is free of charge, it must still be issued in advance and presented on entry.

Can I request a carer ticket on the day?
We strongly recommend arranging this in advance to avoid delays or issues at entry. Ticket queries cannot usually be resolved at the gate.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact tickets@cheesefestival.co.uk, and we will be happy to help.
