Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival 2009

Sturminster Newton Cheese FestivalSo much more than just cheese!  With food galore, crafts, beer, cider, and entertainments too, this year’s festival, on September 12th and 13th 2009, promises to be another great event. It will be the 10th Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival and we are planning to make it the best yet.
Of course there is cheese, and lots of it at the festival, but the array of food and other stalls has to be seen to be believed.
The food tent gets bigger every year and this year over 60 producers are expected to attend, plying the ware they lovingly create.
Nearly all are relatively local, from Dorset and some neighbouring counties. There will be yoghurt, ice cream, meat of every description, bread, olives, herbs and much more.  Soft cheeses, hard cheeses, flavoured cheeses and some very unusual cheeses will be available.

The Mousetrap theatre, this year sponsored for the first time by Dike & Son of Stalbridge (an independent family run grocery store), will again delight us with food and cookery demonstrations.
Ever wondered how the professionals make such wonderful cheese or bread? The Mousetrap can show you. Might you be looking for another tasty recipe? This is the place to find it.

Other attractions include a marvellous selection of craft stalls, again representing the best in local production, from stained glass to jewellery, and ceramics to wooden and textile items.
Entertainment is in the form of live music, Morris dancing, a Punch and Judy show, circus skills and roundabout and swing-boats for children.
Beer (up to 30 different varieties!) and cider are on tap to wet the whistle, along with tea, coffee and soft drinks. There’s plenty to eat too!

Last year the festival was, unfortunately, cancelled due to very wet ground conditions, but this is not a problem we have ever had before and we do not anticipate it happening again any time soon. In fact we’re looking forward to the lovely mid-September weather that we usually get. That will provide the ‘icing on the cake’ for the 2009 festival!
Find the festival at the Sturminster Newton recreation ground on Saturday 12th September and Sunday 13th September, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is well signposted and free, with disabled parking also provided.  Entry is £3 per adult, and free for children under 14.

cittaslow Sturminster Newton

The Cheese Festival and Cittaslow – perfect partners

Earlier this year, Sturminster Newton was awarded Cittaslow status - but what does it mean?  It means that Stur is part of a wider community; a movement that is steadily gaining new members all around the world as more towns see the sense in slowing down and celebrating a good quality of life. Being in the here-and-now rather than rushing from here-to-there!  But even that’s a bit vague perhaps, so let’s look closely at some of the reasons Sturminster was invited to be the 9th British town to join the Cittaslow movement.

  • An army of volunteers working in every sector
  • Independent shops and local-produce markets
  • Arts and community facilities which are the envy of the west
  • Open spaces, green lanes, the wildlife reserve and the Trailway
  • A deep respect for our heritage coupled with an understanding about developing in a sustainable way
  • Growing opportunities for youth
  • A range of clubs and learning facilities for all ages, abilities and interests
  • Friendly, hospitable people

And of course, the Cheese Festival is a prime example of why Stur is a Cittaslow town – it brings together local producers of great quality food and other crafts in an environment where residents and visitors can enjoy and celebrate all the good things on our doorstep.  Slowly, savouring every mouthful!

We don’t have to do anything different to be a Cittaslow town.  We do need to carry on doing what we’re doing, keeping a nurturing eye on our rich history and heritage even as we develop and grow.  The Cheese Festival and Cittaslow give our community an opportunity to bring together under a promotional umbrella all the amazing things we do to give the town an even further boost.
